What challenges as well as opportunities does the energy transition offer the Dutch energy market?

Everyone is affected by the Paris climate agreement; governments, businesses and consumers. The energy transition needed to reduce CO2 emissions demands change. This brings challenges, but certainly also opportunities.

The goal of the climate agreement is to reduce CO2 emissions by 95% by 2050 compared to 1990. Although European Union member states were the most committed to climate in 2019, compared to other regions of the world, the Netherlands lags behind. As things stand, the Netherlands is not going to meet its first target in 2030 - a 49% reduction in emissions. This makes the demand for change more urgent, but is not the only reason why change is necessary.

Capgemini's recent WEMO report shows that the current situation - in which renewable energy generation is booming - makes it increasingly clear that something needs to be done. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown period, high percentages of renewable energy were generated, which were years ahead of forecasts. The resulting blackouts demonstrate the need to increase grid flexibility and reform the electricity market.

Interesting issues

The changes required to achieve the energy transition goals raise interesting questions such as; what will the services of the future look like? But also; how will these changes impact current business processes? Do companies have the right capabilities and technologies to make the transition?

The WEMO report addresses these issues by continent, with the Dutch situation only briefly highlighted. To offer better insight into what is happening in the Netherlands in terms of energy transition, Capgemini is conducting an in-depth benchmark study. This study focuses on the question: What challenges and opportunities does the energy transition offer the Dutch energy market?

Participation in this survey will give you insight into the opportunities and challenges presented by the energy transition. This can help shape or adjust your own strategy on climate goals.
